The key difference
Alibaba.com is a business-to-business (B2B) wholesale marketplace: you buy from manufacturers and suppliers, usually in bulk, and can often negotiate prices, customization and packaging. AliExpress is a retail marketplace: you buy single items at the listed price, which is why it became popular for dropshipping. Both belong to the Alibaba Group.
Side-by-side comparison
| Alibaba.com | AliExpress | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | B2B wholesale marketplace connecting businesses with manufacturers and suppliers | Retail (consumer) marketplace run by the same group, Alibaba |
| How you buy | Usually in bulk; each supplier sets a minimum order quantity (MOQ). Prices drop as volume rises and are often negotiable | Single items at the listed price, like any online shop |
| Dropshipping | Alibaba.com Dropshipping lists products suppliers will ship one at a time. Alibaba’s notice says its Shopify app went offline on 19 Aug 2024 | Free Dropshipping Center; order automation through official partner apps such as DSers |
| Custom / private label | Core strength: many suppliers offer customization, logos and packaging (usually higher minimums) | Limited; you sell the product as listed |
| Buyer protection | Trade Assurance: free on orders paid through Alibaba.com. Refund claims within 30 days of delivery (60 for Enterprise buyers) if an order is not shipped, goes missing or has product issues | Buyer Protection: refunds if an item doesn’t arrive or isn’t as described, through the dispute process |
| Best for | Bulk stock, private label, lower cost per unit once a product sells | Testing products with no stock and no minimums |
Minimum orders and price
On Alibaba.com each supplier sets its own minimum order quantity (MOQ) and tiered prices, so cost per unit usually falls as you order more. AliExpress sells single units, so there is no bulk commitment, but you pay a retail-style price per item.
Alibaba.com also runs a dropshipping section where suppliers list products they will ship one unit at a time, so the line between the two has blurred.
Buyer protection compared
Trade Assurance (Alibaba.com) is free and applies to orders paid through the platform. According to Alibaba.com, you can claim a refund within 30 days of delivery (60 days for Enterprise and Enterprise Pro buyers) if an order isn’t shipped, goes missing or arrives defective, incorrect or damaged. Alibaba.com mediates disputes and looks at evidence from both sides; it does not automatically side with the buyer. Paying outside the platform loses this protection.
For eligible products, Alibaba.com’s On-time Delivery Guarantee gives compensation of 10% of the order value, up to US$100, as coupons if delivery is late.
AliExpress Buyer Protection covers items that don’t arrive or aren’t as described, through its dispute process.

Take the supplier quizFrequently asked questions
Is AliExpress cheaper than Alibaba?
Per single item, Alibaba.com bulk prices are usually lower, but only once you meet the supplier’s minimum order. For one-off purchases, AliExpress is often simpler and can work out cheaper overall.
Can I dropship from Alibaba?
Yes. Alibaba.com has a dropshipping section with products suppliers ship one at a time. Its notice says the Alibaba.com Dropshipping app for Shopify went offline on 19 August 2024, so check the site for current ways to connect your store.
Is Alibaba safe to buy from?
Orders paid through Alibaba.com with Trade Assurance have refund and mediation protection. Paying a supplier directly outside the platform loses that protection.
Are Alibaba and AliExpress owned by the same company?
Yes, both are part of the Alibaba Group, but they are separate marketplaces with different rules.
